It is situated in the north of the province of Cáceres on the "Ruta de la Plata ". It is a medieval town founded by King Alfonso VIII. It has a great historical and artistic heritage closely linked to the monarchy and the Church since it was the Episcope See and also it was a cultural and study centre having three universities in those days.
It contains a magnificent range of artistic and historic heritage and is well worth a visit.
Its monumental heritage includes the Old and the New Cathedral, various churches, convents, military monuments, palaces and stately houses.
